Parliamentary Press Gallery Midwinter Ball

PPA was pleased to brave the winter chill and join the Canberra Bubble at the famed Parliamentary Press Gallery Midwinter Ball this week.

Loosely modelled on the White House Correspondents annual gala dinner, the Midwinter Ball has become a fixture in the parliamentary social calendar. Indeed, an especially unique event, guests include senior ranks of all parliamentary parties, including the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition, as well as the heads of corporate Australia and the Parliamentary Press Gallery throng.

Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd , ChatGPT and Anthony Albanese’s dog featured heavily in the good-humoured roast speeches delivered by the PM and Leader of the Opposition.

The forthcoming referendum was also ever-present with Indigenous performances punctuating the night’s theme, Great Southern Land. Labor Senator for WA Jana Stewart stole the show in her stunning Yes dress, emblazoned with words taken from the Uluru Statement From the Heart.

The good fun was also for a good cause. To date, the Midwinter Ball has raised over $4,803,000 for charity across a variety of organisations.
