PPA Joins the Prime Minister at the National Press Club

Precision Public Affairs was delighted to join the Prime Minister, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, at the National Press Club of Australia today.

In his speech, the Prime Minister confirmed his government’s biggest policy shift since its election in May 2022. Billed as “the right decision, not the easy decision”, the Prime Minister withstood a 45-minute peppering from journalists about the Government’s long-mooted backflip over the Stage Three tax cuts for higher income earners which were legislated by the Morrison Government in 2019.

Under the proposed tax scale rejig the Albanese Government will halve planned tax cuts for the highest earners and redirect the money to deliver an extra $804 to most taxpayers.

The change was the result of options provided by senior Treasury and Finance officials who were tasked over the summer with finding cost-of-living relief for Australians. Indeed, Treasury advice states that due to the pandemic, damaged supply chains, and conflicts overseas, the economic forecast in which the tax cuts were first proposed is not accurate to the economy of today. If the ‘old plan’ were to continue, the Prime Minister argued, ‘middle Australia’ would be left out in the cold.

The change of position was confirmed in the Cabinet on Tuesday and endorsed by the Labor Caucus on Wednesday in Canberra. The Prime Minister answered questions on accusations that he misled the electorate by stating: “[w]e’re being very upfront with the Australian people that, when economic circumstances have changed, it is the responsible thing to do to change our policy”.
